Join the Collaborative Knowledge Management Program
Would you like to participate in the design and
testing of a collaborative knowledge management tool?
The whole world has been talking about knowledge management for some
ten years or so but we have yet to see any significant roll out of
knowledge management software. One of the issues has been the
confusion about just what a knowledge management system is (click
here for linked paper).
We are also being told we should all be involved in collaborative
processing, but no one seems to provide a very clear explanation of
exactly what collaborative processing means and what it can be used
for.
We have a pretty good idea of what knowledge
management is and what collaborative processing is but strictly from
our perspective as people who design and develop information
management software solutions (that has been our business for 25
years). That is, our view is a very pragmatic one based on many
years of developing software that real people actually use to run
their businesses. Ours is not an academic view.
We are pragmatists because we actually have to
design, build, text, market, sell, install and support our
solutions. In the final analysis we have to deliver a product that
works and that people actually want to use.
As innovators we think there is (or should be) a
need for a clever, easy to use collaborative knowledge management
tool. This tool would combine elements of document management,
knowledge management, tacit knowledge management, workflow and
project management to allow end users to create, share and search
knowledge as well as manage knowledge based projects and collaborate
on specific tasks and documents.
This tool should also utilize the very latest
architectures (e.g., SOA) and technologies (e.g., Web Services) to
make it as open and easy to deploy and access as possible. It should
be as light as possible with a tiny footprint and minimal
bandwidth requirement. It should employ both the push and pull
paradigms and users should have total control over their
involvement; it cannot be an intrusive tool.
We have decided to invest in the creation of such
a collaborative knowledge management tool and have in fact produced
the first specifications and most of the engines we think we will
need. However, as this is such a new concept we want as much end
user involvement as possible in the final design, user
interface/look and feel and functionality. We want your input so we
can actually build something you want to use and look forward to
using. The last thing we want to do as a software developer is
produce the answer to a question no one is asking.
Rather than sending you specifications to review
and comment on (a complex and inexact process) we will send you
prototypes to install, test and report on. We think the 'hands-on'
approach is much more preferable to the "Please read these 300
densely packed technical pages and comment" approach.
You will be able to install and test the prototype
on any PC (it will not require a server installation) running XP or
Vista and we will automate the installation to make it as easy as
possible.
We will also automate the response process by
linking you to forms on our website. Interested participants will be
required to register (also via forms on our website). You can opt
out of the program at any time. If you participate and submit
responses for each prototype shipped to you, you will automatically
qualify for a free 5 user copy of the final product together with
one year of maintenance and support.
The project is scheduled to kick off in February
2009 and have about a three to six calendar month lifecycle. The
final functionality, and therefore project duration, will depend
upon your input.
