We have developed the next version of the web client (version
2.4.1) and will shortly announce it as a service pack download on our website.
With each release it gets closer and closer to the functionality of
the Windows smart-client.
The development team tell me that two more updates should see the
web client
with equivalent functionality to the smart-client. The target date
for equivalence is end of second quarter (June/July) in 2012.
There will also be a couple of updates especially for the iPad
and iOS 5.0. The iOS environment provides special challenges because
of the limitations of the Safari browser and the lack of a file
system. However, we have developed new techniques and tools to
address the differences of iOS and updates incorporating these
improvements will be rolled out over the next few months. You will
soon be able to use RecFind 6 on your iPad in lieu of your desktop
or notebook.
Note that the new web client requires RecFind 6 version 2.4 to be
installed. If you are running an earlier version please
contact us for information on how
to get your copy of version 2.4.

RecFind 6 web-client...

As part of the repositioning of our products to address a rapidly
changing work environment we have begun the development of a series
of RecFind 6 mobile apps.
The first app is called 'ContactK1Corp' and it adds a new, easier
and more convenient way to contact us about anything; support,
sales, training, consultancy, etc.
This first app will be free to all users to download and install
for all supported devices - basically any iPod, iPhone or iPad and
any Android phone or tablet with compatible operating system
versions.
The idea behind making it free is twofold; it will make it much
easier and more convenient for you to contact us and ask questions
and it will also get you used to the new paradigm of using mobile
devices for business purposes.
The new mobile app also provides another way to access free
support for all customers under a current ASU. At a time when most
software vendors are making it as difficult as possible to register
a support call we are making it easier and free.
The app 'talks' to a specially configured (but still standard)
version of RecFind 6 hosted at a data centre in Texas. RecFind 6
acts as the 'backend' and automatically processes all inquiries,
logging them in our CRM system and advising the most relevant K1Corp
manager of your question.
This first app is also a good example of what can be done to
handle customer inquiries and requests using a simple mobile app and
RecFind 6 to handle all of the business processing required.
The next app on the drawing board is designed to make it as easy
as possible to search for and download documents when 'on-the-go'
using your mobile device. It will also allow you to create new
documents on your mobile device (e.g., an Android phone like the
Samsung Galaxy II S) and upload them to RecFind 6. This app will
obviously communicate with your in-house copy of RecFind 6, not our
hosted version in Texas. The app download will include everything
you need to do to configure your copy of RecFind 6 to be the
'backend' for your mobile app.
Look for more innovative RecFind 6 mobile apps in 2012. Please
also let us know your ideas for a mobile app that will work with
RecFind 6 and make your life easier. We would love to have your
input.

Queensland RecFind 6 User Group
Meeting
We are the first to admit that we have not spent as much time and
energy promoting RecFind 6 User Groups as we should have. This has
changed and we will now be much more active in this area.
The first of the new RecFind 6 user group meetings was held in
Brisbane, Queensland on October 26. We were most fortunate to have
it hosted by Gayle Walters of the State Library of Queensland.
The agenda included a presentation by Gayle titled "eDRMS,
Implementation of RecFind 6 in the State Library of Queensland"
and another by Tony Holland of K1Corp titled "Using
RecFind 6 for multiple applications such as HR Management & Contract
Management".
The meeting was well attended with 30 representatives of RecFind
sites within the State of Queensland. Lunch was provided by K1Corp
and everyone seemed to enjoy the presentations and question and
answer sessions.
We are now looking to help organize RecFind 6 user group meetings
in other geographic locations. If you are interested in hosting a
RecFind 6 User Group meeting please contact us by

New Dashboard Service
A dashboard is a very useful way to display key
metrics such as performance data from workflow (e.g., Tasks
allocated, due, complete, overdue, etc.) or operations (files added,
files open, files closed, etc) or specific applications like
contract management (due for renewal in 1 month, 2 months, 3 months,
overdue, etc) and accounts payable processing (Invoices unpaid, due
15 days, due 30 days, etc.).
A dashboard is a dynamic display, changing as your data changes
so that management always has a precise, easy-to-read and up-to-date
picture of key performance criteria.
We now have a new tool and a new service so we are able to design and
ship dashboard displays to meet your unique needs. We can provide
multiple dashboards types and can link them to any data in your
RecFind 6 database.
Options include a rich set of Meters, Dials, Sliders, Switches,
Digital numbers and text, Odometers and other common controls. We
also offer a complete selection of 180+ 2D charts, Bar, Pie, Line,
Spline, Stock, Candle Stick, Bubble and most wide spread chart
types. Both gauges and charts are designed in uniform style for a
harmonious appearance.
This is a low cost, personalized service that can deliver high

Knowledgeone 'Old'
Products - End of Product Lifecycle Warning
|
This is what happens when you try to run a 16bit version of
RecFind on a 64bit Windows 7 PC. |
We need to remind all of our 'old' RecFind and K1 users that
technology is moving forward and that their old products (especially
the 16 bit ones) are more likely than not to fail in the near
future as their IT departments upgrade underlying technology.
All of our old products gained a new lease of life when Vista
failed to rollout and replace XP. As we all know it took Microsoft
two years to 'fix' Vista and re-release it as Windows 7, a
much better product. Consequently our customers are now rolling out
Windows 7 (happily skipping Vista) or planning to roll out Windows 7
in 2012.
Along with Windows 7 the IT teams are also upgrading SQL Server
(to version 2008) and Windows Server (to version 2008). They
are also upgrading to Office 2010 as well as new browsers (e.g.,
IE9) and mail clients (e.g., Outlook 2010).
We know we have a large number of users around the world still
running old versions of RecFind in production, some as old as
version 2.0 (15+ years old) and all using unsupported versions of
database software (e.g., Btrieve, DISAM and SQL Server 6.5).
You tell us that you are still running our old products because,
"they do the job" and "they don't break". Most customers with old
products do not have a maintenance agreement so they are also the
lowest cost (no cost) records and document management solutions
around and that is probably another good reason for continuing to
run them despite the risk.
RecFind 3.2 and 4.0 in particular are providing
hundreds of customers around the world with zero annual cost records
and document management and imaging functionality. They have been
really impressive investments and are still contributing to the
bottom line long after their end-of-life date.
Personally I am amazed that our old 16 bit products still run
under operating systems they were never designed to run under. My
best guess as the designer is that because they were programmed
strictly to the Microsoft Windows API (and literally tested to death
- we don't believe in customers debugging our software) that this has been their
saving grace. But it is luck, not good design, that is the cause of
them still operating because there is
no way we could have predicted what Microsoft would change in future
versions of its products. We have just been very, very lucky.
However, I can now confidently predict that these same old 16bit products will
fail in many unpredictable ways if and when you upgrade to the
latest versions of Windows, SQL Server, Windows Server and Office.
Our good luck is about to run out.
Please make sure your IT team is aware of this. I don't want to
hear "You should have warned us", we are warning you.
I am afraid it is now time to pat those old faithful products on the
back and say "Well done old chap and thanks for hanging on for so
long but now it is time for a well earned retirement."
As an example, we were recently asked to do an urgent recovery of
'sensitive' data from an old RecFind 2.0 DISAM system. Luckily the
customer had a readable backup (not always the case). Even more luckily, we still had
RecFind 2.0 and DISAM expertise in house but even so, it was a very
difficult and technically challenging job and not one we would like
to face again. It was also a very expensive job for the customer
and it had not been budgeted for because no one had expected the old
system to fail even though the server was ten years old. Please
don't let this happen to you.
If you are not sure if your old RecFind products will work in your
new IT environment please contact
K1Corp support and ask them for
advice.
If you would like to know which of our products have been
decommissioned please see
this link...
If you would like to know what would be involved in upgrading
from your old RecFind system to RecFind 6 please
contact us and we will
provide you with a detailed quotation.
